About Us

Opoku constructs richly layered visual assemblages that examine the complex entanglements between individuals and the objects through which they articulate identity. Describing these compositions as “symbolic portraits,” the artist merges conventions of classical portraiture with the destabilizing strategies of Surrealism. In doing so, he generates a pictorial space where representational forms are simultaneously rendered, disrupted, and reconfigured.

The human figure—often drawn from the artist’s immediate circle of friends, family, and from his own self-image—becomes a site of both revelation and concealment. Faces are obscured or eclipsed by a constellation of inanimate objects, transforming the portrait into a narrative matrix that charts personal history, cultural memory, and psychological terrain. These objects operate as mnemonic devices and biographical signifiers, complicating distinctions between subject and material world, presence and absence, visibility and erasure.

Through this practice, Opoku interrogates the lived experiences of diaspora and cultural assimilation, foregrounding how identity is continually shaped—and sometimes distorted—by systems of commodity and consumer culture. His work posits that the objects we accumulate and assign value to do more than reflect our preferences; they construct the frameworks through which we understand ourselves. As the artist notes, “Who we are is what we value,” a sentiment that underscores the critical lens through which he approaches representation.

By collapsing the boundaries between portraiture, objecthood, and narrative, Opoku invites viewers to reconsider the mechanisms of self-fashioning in a globalized world. His paintings propose a portraiture that is not merely likeness-based but materially and symbolically charged, insisting that identity itself is an assemblage—fluid, hybrid, and continually negotiated.
